Owning a small, family coffee shop is not the quick path to riches. The experience is more about love, said Debbie McGinn, who, along with her daughter, Mary, owns the Bean in Mesilla. “We’ve always had more of a dream than a business plan,” McGinn said. Located at 2011 Avenida De Mesilla, the business is celebrating its seventh year at its current location and 10th year in business. “My daughter opened The Bean in Mesilla in January 2000,” MiGinn, 60, said. “She opened it in a little building a block off the plaza, it was basically a coffee cart under a roof.”

“We have a lot of faithful, local people,” McGinn said. The Bean serves breakfast items, soups, muffins, quiches, (Sandwiches) as well as coffee. But the menu can vary depending on what fresh produce can be purchased at the farmers market and from local vendors in Las Cruces. “We tweak it depending upon what’s available,” she said. “We make all of our own food. The only things we buy pre-made are our bagels and croissants.”
